How do chain stores get their store brand products?

How do store chains such as Giant Eagle Markets, Acme Markets ,even Walmart and Target to name a few, get their store brand products? Do they have their own manufacturing plants or do they buy the products from existing manufacturers and have their labels put on them? If they do buy the products from existing manufacturers like Purina, Post, Kellogg’s, General Mills for example, can you tell which company originally made the product?

There are companies that will “private label” products for stores like the ones you mention. Sometimes it may be the same products with the brand names, but many products will have a “Not manufactured by ….” notification. For example, a store brand pain reliever will say something like “Not manufactured by Tylenol.” It can be difficult to determine who actually made any given product.
