How Tiny Will They Get? – The New Generation Super-Miniature Audio Power Amplifiers
New generation super-miniature amplifiers are a result of the same miniaturization that has caused computers and cell phones to shrink. Everything is becoming smaller and manufacturers are packing more and more features into the same space. In the past, tube amps would be commonplace and take up a large part of the living room. Tube amps still have their fair share of fanatics. Nonetheless they have been replaced by solid-state amps for the most part.
Today’s amps integrate traditional pre-amps and power amps and assemble everything neatly in a single package no larger than a VCR. A new generation of super-miniature amplifiers, such as the Amphony Model 100 microFidelity amp, has become possible due to new developments in audio technology concerning power efficiency. Even though these mini amps deliver up to 50 Watts – enough to drive a speaker to high volume, they are no bigger than a deck of cards.
In history, audio amplifiers would have comparatively low power efficiency due to the “Class-A” and “Class-AB” structure of analog amplifiers. Only a small part of the consumed energy – typically in the order of 20% to 30% – is actually transformed into audio by analog amplifiers. The left over portion is radiated as heat. This requires that depending on the supported output power, analog audio amps have to afford substantial cooling which is accomplished by utilizing heat sinks. These heat sinks do not permit these amplifiers to be made very small.
Digital “Class-D” amplifiers offer higher power efficiency than analog amplifiers – typically around 80% to 95% – and thus can be miniaturized. One main disadvantage of “Class-D” amplifiers is the fact that digital “Class-D” amplifiers use a switching stage at the output which creates non-linearity and consequently some amount of distortion of the audio signal. This disadvantage has slowed the progress of digital amplifiers.
More recent “Class-T” and newer “Class-D” amplifier architectures, such as Amphony’s Model 100, incorporate a feedback mechanism where the output of the amplifier is fed back to the input. This feedback enables the amplifier to compensate for nonlinearities of the output switching stage and consequently lower audio distortion to comparable levels of analog amplifiers whilst preserving the audio efficiency of digital amplifiers.
These new generation miniature audio amplifiers open up applications where traditional amplifiers would fail, such as speaker installations where space is premium, including in-ceiling speakers and applications that connect speakers to a cable box or DVD/MP3 player.
