how do you set up an electrical circuit?

Ammeter
Cell (Battery)
Variable Resistor

Step by step guideline would be greatly appreciated 
Yeah, its in parrallel and im using crocodile clips, my single battery is just your regualr battery that you would use in circuits, and im testing the resistance in a circuit, using a variable resistor, for example a 10cm length of copper wire. just any method would be great
Battery to ammeter to variable resistor to resistor to other lead of the battery (all in series).
Voltmeter across the resistor (in parallel with it.).
This would allow you to measure the current through the resistor and monitor the voltage across it while you vary the variable resistor.
