How Small Can They Get? – The Latest Super-Miniature Audio Amps
New generation super-miniature amplifiers are a result of the same miniaturization that has caused computers and cell phones to shrink. While the features are growing, the size of today’s consumer products is getting smaller and smaller. You probably still recall the good old tube amps which would dominate the living room. While tube amps are even now well-liked amongst fanatics, audio amplifiers these days are solid-state amps for the most part.
While historically there would be separate pre amp and power amp stages, today’s solid-state amp merge everything into a neat package no larger than the size of a VCR. Thanks to latest developments in audio technology in regard to amplifier power efficiency, a new generation of super-miniature amps has become possible, such as the Amphony Model 100 microFidelity amp. Even though these mini amps provide up to 50 Watts – sufficiently to drive a speaker to high volume, they are no larger than a deck of cards.
In history, audio amplifiers would have rather low power efficiency due to the “Class-A” and “Class-AB” architecture of analog amplifiers. Analog audio amplifiers will only convert between 20% to 30% of the consumed power into audio while the left over portion is radiated as heat. This requires that depending on the supported output power, analog audio amps have to afford considerable cooling which is achieved by using heat sinks. These heat sinks do not permit these amplifiers to be made very small.
“Class-D” amplifiers are based on a digital design which provides larger power efficiency than “Class-A” or “Class-AB” amplifiers – normally in the order of 80% to 95%. Thus only a small portion is wasted as heat which was the key in being able to miniaturize audio amplifier designs. One main disadvantage of “Class-D” amplifiers is the fact that digital “Class-D” amplifiers use a switching stage at the output which causes non-linearity and consequently some amount of distortion of the audio signal. This drawback has slowed the progress of digital amplifiers.
Newer amplifier technologies have emerged such as “Class-T” and newer “Class-D” architectures. These technologies, such as the one used in Amphony’s Model 100 provide for a feedback of the output signal to the amplifier input. Using this design, the amplifier is able to compensate for errors brought on by the switching output stage. Amplifiers based on this design are capable to achieve low audio distortion similar to previous analog amplifiers but at the same time the power efficiency of digital amplifiers.
These new miniature audio amplifiers open up applications where traditional amplifiers have failed. They are suited in particular for installations with minimal space, such as in ceiling speakers. Other applications include connecting speakers to a DVD/MP3 player or cable box.
