tying in a cinder block wall to overhead concrete beam?
I have a concrete suspended slab floor held up on one side with a 8″ thick reinforced concrete beam that spans about 20 ft. I am now adding a second story over that floor with a new bearing wall on top of that beam. To support the additional weight I would like construct a cinder block bearing wall underneath the beam so that the beam becomes a wall. How do I tie in the new cinder block bearing wall into the existing beam?Thks.
Good question- your new support wall is going to settle- I would do this by supporting the existing 8″ Beam with Steel column’s, drilled and anchored to the beam-then fill in the wall area with block- set the steel so a block can be cut out to hide it inside the wall- Edit
I would use 3 support Post ,same type used in a Basement to support a Beam- with an Adjustable Screw- leave the screw open, built the upper wall and lay up your block wall, make certain the post are setting on a pier, a little wider and deeper than the footing for the wall- later if it settles, make any needed adjustments- I would make the screw accessable for future adjustment just in case.
