Why does my Packard Bell system take so long to start up.?
I’m on BT Broadband which works fine. It’s just the time it takes from switching on the computer before I can sign in. Can I speed this up?

this is a common problem and in your case the problem lies with the bt yahoo sign in page
i am also with bt broadband and have never used any of the software thats supplied with the home hub,it takes too much resources and isnt nessecary
first use the ethernet cable that came with your hub,by using ethernet you dont have to install any drivers which means you can avoid having to use the set up disk period
once you have connected the ethernet cable from your hub to the p.c you then need to go to “internet options” and set your homepage,for example type www.yahoo.co.uk then press apply and ok
now you can simply click internet explorer and you will go to your homepage,exactly the same homepage you were using before minus all the bells and whistles
basically martin the reason for your slow start up time is because all the software thats installed from the bt set up disk(anti spyware,anti-virus,hub manager,vualt) is entered as a start up item,so all these need to load before you can sign in
however by removing all these and using the plain internet explorer you can improve your start up time by probally around 30 seconds
to check your start up items go to start>run and type msconfig>return…then press the start up tab
you will now see all the start up items on your p.c,and you can disable these by removing the ticks,however do not stop anything you dont recognize,just to be safe
note:if you want to use a usb connection for broadband these require drivers on all versions of windows so its best to use a ethernet connection as these require no drivers
also martin while on the subject of broadband speed why not try gigaget download manager(http://www.gigaget.com/),this increase your download speed by up to 75% by splitting the download into parts and downloading from different locations,the result is a much improved download speed,for example i get a standard download speed of around 350kbps,however downloading with gigaget this rises to around 650/700kbps
for broadband tweaking why not try “dr-tcp” avalible from http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp,this is a neat little utility that fine tunes your broadband connection,this is done by editing the TCP Receive Window
This is where you set RWIN (RcvWindow). RWIN is the single most important tweak. Raising RWIN from default (8760 for Win95/98/98SE/NT and 17520 for WinME/2K/XP) can greatly improve download speeds
just be sure you read the online manual before you use this(http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578),but it does improve the speeds
