The blue screen of death is a common problem for Windows users. The methods to fix the blue screen of death (commonly referred to as BSOD) can be as varied as the problems causing it.
When Windows senses any software, hardware, or driver error, it will go into this Windows stop error process. Usually, a simple reboot can fix the problem. However, if you have reoccurring BSODs, then it is likely symptomatic of a serious error in your system. Write down the error code that it gives you, as this will likely help you in your troubleshooting process.
Here are some simple and easy things to do to fix and minimize your chances of a BSOD occurring.
Hardware Problems Causing BSOD
The first thing you’ll want to do is to boot Windows in safe mode. If you are still experiencing the dreaded blue screen, then it is likely that your issue is a hardware problem.
If you have recently installed new hardware, then the first step of troubleshooting is to remove that hardware to reduce the number of potential causes. If you are uncomfortable removing the hardware, then you might want to hire someone to remove it for you. However, I only recommend doing this after you have eliminated the other possibilities as causes!
Spyware or Other Malicious Programs Causing BSOD
Viruses and spyware are notorious for causing Windows system errors.
Again, boot your system into safe mode. Run all available antivirus, antispyware, and registry cleaners. If any virus shows, eliminate them and run Windows in normal mode. If you are still getting the blue screen, then return to Windows in safe mode and use a restore point to return your system to a previous state.
Software or Driver Problems
Software problems can also be a likely culprit. When you have already checked for viruses, return your system (using a restore point) to a state before the software was downloaded. If the software is still present, then uninstall it and reboot your system.
Faulty drivers can also be a source of the BSOD. Updating and reinstalling your drivers is recommended. Sometimes you can identify the specific driver that needs to be updated by using the stop error code that you recorded earlier.
You can update your drivers manually or use a device driver update tool. I recommend doing it manually, as it isn’t too difficult. There’s no real reason to clog up your PC with more software.
