Bright Green
Have you ever gone out into the backyard and tried to look at things from a different perspective? Have you ever lied on the grass or under a tree and looked really close at the things around you? Have you ever imagined being so small that everything around you is gigantic? If you haven’t, then you need to. Because when you do this, it opens up a whole new world to you… an insects world.
In a common garden there are billions upon billions of insects. Multiply that by the amount of gardens in the world and you get a huge amount of insects. In fact, if you were to find a giant scale and put all the insects in the world on one side and all the elephants in the world on the other, the insects would far outweigh the elephants.
That’s how many there are. And most of the time, we as humans, don’t even realize they’re there. It’s only when one annoys us, or lands on us, or we see a really ugly one, that we notice them. Some we see more than others, ants, flies and bees come to mind pretty easily and we’ve all seen them before.
Others don’t show themselves so readily. This is because, even though there are so many insects in the world, there are just as many, if not more, predators who prey on insects.
One of these predators is the common garden skink (Lampropholis delicata). The common garden skink is native to the east coast of Australia and most kids would have found one in the garden at some stage. This small lizard preys on small insects. In fact almost all of it’s diet consists of small insects.
The common garden skink is just one of the many predators that insects have. But just as the skink preys on small garden creatures, the common garden skink has predators of its own. Birds, for instance, love to eat this small reptile. Dogs and cats love to play with it, often ending in death for this small garden creature. So as a defense mechanism, the skink has evolved an ingenious way to outsmart it’s predators… by dropping its tail. The tail then wiggles around on the ground, or in the predators mouth, while the skink gets away with its life.
Another way for insects to outsmart predators is to camouflage themselves. A lot of insects use this method and it works pretty well for most. One of the garden creatures that use this method is the Cabbage Moth larvae (Plutella xylostella). This small, bright green caterpillar is usually found on the undersides of bright green leaves. Things like cabbage, spinach and lettuce leaves are the perfect hiding spot for these small caterpillars as the leaves are big and, usually, bright green. The Cabbage Moth larvae are herbivores but have many, many predators so the undersides of bight green leaves are the perfect hiding spot. Most times, the first we humans see of these little garden creatures are the telltale holes it eats in the leaves.
There are many other defense mechanisms in the insect kingdom, too many to mention, and all of them designed to keep predators from finding or eating the insects in question.
So the next time you’re out in the garden, get down low. Very low. Have a look around and try to imagine what life is like down there for all the small garden creatures.
