Bussman Fusetron
What is this fuse for?
In a box I found an industrial fuse of some sort. it looks exactly like a commercial 220 volt fuse, but a LOT larger. The fuse canister is 8 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. The entire fuse, with the copper contacts at both ends, is 12 inches long. In the center of the canister, there is a pink and white label. It says “600 V. a.c. Int. rating – 200,000 amps. rms” and below that “Fusetron Dual Element – TIME DELAY-CURRENT LIMITING-CLASS RK5 FUSE”. then there is the UL listing and a paragrap that says ” Mine Duty 300V DC 20,000 amps Int. rating. The thermal cutout and fuse link herein give ALL-Purpose protection to motors, circuitsm and feeders” and below that “DO NOT REPLACE WITH AN ORDINARY FUSE” in large letters and Bussman below it. What is this fuse, and what was it used for? It’s by far the largest, strangest looking fuse I have ever seen.
It is an industrial grade time-delay fuse, probably used in a mine (hence the label for Mine Duty) 600v rms (root-means square)alternating current. 300v DC current.
. Both an overload and a time-delay purpose. That is why you would not replace with an ordinary fuse.
