Save A Boatload Of Money – Buy A Used Car!
There isn’t anything quite like having a brand new car. Everything about the car is pristine. There is no wear, the body is perfect with no scratches or dings, and it even has that incomparable new car smell. But all those things go away with time, and you’re left with the car payments of a new car.
Startlingly (in my opinion) you can find an almost new car with low mileage for a lot less. Car dealerships have a huge selection of low mileage late model used cars. I don’t know where these barely used cars come from. I recently saw a 2008 Buick Lacrosse with 30,000 miles for sale at an Iowa dealership. There’s 2009 Ford F-150 available for $27,000 at a Green Bay used car dealership. And a 2009 Honda Civic for $23,000 at a Georgia Honda Dealership. Who purchased this new car and then got rid of it while it still has so much use? Maybe they weren’t able to make their car payments.Perhaps they can afford to buy a new car every year? Go figure?The fact is that you can buy it for much less than they paid – and it’s still almost new!
Pricing
You’d think that the price of a used car would be what it was worth when it was new, adjusted for use (mileage), any damage, and depreciation because it’s no longer the newest model. That depreciation is often a significant percentage of the price. If you had bought that same car a year ago, you’d still be happy with it, even if a newer model was available now. You would probably still owe more on it than it’s worth on the open market. But when they go to buy a car, most people want the latest and greatest. Within a year, they’ll have a used car.
So why not reap the benefit of this perception which unduly decreases the price of used cars? Find a model you like. Most car dealers will certify vehicles that are in good condition and have a limited number of miles. You’ll still be able to finance a used car, just like you could if it was new. Many of these cars are still covered by their original factory warranty, and the dealership often sells extended warranties.
The Benefit of Hindsight
Sometimes when a new model is released, there are unknown defects. Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, Edmunds and others test the new car models and publish their findings. But they can only test the cars for a limited time. Some information, like reliability just isn’t available until thousands of them are on the road over an extended period of time. Used car buyer often have some of this information before they decide which car to buy. Also, even the best-built new cars have recalls over the first few years. When you get a used car, many of these problems have already been taken care of.
If you’re watching your budget, like so many of us are, consider buying a late model used car. The dealership that sells new cars is the best place to get a used car of the same make. They have a good selection, sales people who are familiar with the car, and factory trained technicians who can service your car going forward.
