Carbon Resistors
Most material is either a conductor or an insulator. That is, it will both conduct and support the flow of electrical current or it will prevent or impede it. Metals are typically excellent conductors since they allow the flow of electrical current freely. This is why electrical parts, such as the ones found in your computer circuit board or television are made of metal.
Not all conductors are created equal. Some do the job better than others. For example, copper is a much better conductor that nickel. Silver and gold are even better than copper. When determining how to make electrical components, manufacturers have to weigh the cost compared to the ability for the conductor to transmit the right amount of electrical flow.
Typically, the best insulators are ceramics and glasses. Some plastics also make great insulators. Other insulators include rubber, cloth and even dry air. Plastics and rubber are often used for handles of kitchen utensils, for example, because of their resistance to allowing electricity or heat to pass through them.
Some materials can change between conductor and insulator based on their current state. For example, dry wood is a great insulator but becomes a conductor as soon as its wet. This is because water is actually an excellent conductor. This is the same reason that you should not swim when there is a storm. Lighting may strike the water and because water is a conductor, it can result in injury or death.
The materials that are not insulators or conductors are known as semiconductors. These semiconductors will carry electrical flow and current but they do not do so as well as a typical conductor. When creating electrical components, it is important to understand the differences between the conductivity or insulation characteristics of various components. In any circuit, it is important to regulate the amount of electrical flow throughout. This is typically done with quality resistors.
