6 Reasons Why You Need A Surge Protector
Most people have some sort of expensive appliance. Maybe it’s an HD television. Maybe it’s a top of the line computer. Or perhaps an expensive, sleek refrigerator with all the latest doodads. 3) Computers are not only kept safe from electrical surges that can damage their circuits, but the data on their hard drives is also safe, ensuring that important documents and records will not be wiped out by electric spikes.
4) There’s no need to unplug all your devices when you don’t need them. Surge protectors have a single off button that can shut off all appliances and devices currently connected to the power strip.
5) Because it acts as a regulator for electricity, surge protectors can also help keep electrical bills down. And of course they also keep down the bills for any appliances that need to be replaced because of electrical surges!
6) Because electrical spikes cannot only damage appliances that start fires as well, surge protectors have the added benefit of safeguarding your family and home as well.
There are other great options, too. Newer models have things like USB drives, Telephone Line connections, and ethernet ports. Devices that would typically use these connections can be zapped by spikes in electricity, too, so a surge protector can not only protect your television, but also your fax machine or iPod!
In closing, it should be noted that if you’re willing to spend $5000 on a home theater setup complete with television, speakers, receiver, and DVD or Blu-ray player, you should also be willing to spend at least $50-$100 in order to make sure that a lightning strike doesn’t render your equipment useless. The great thing is, many higher end surge protectors also offer an insurance policy that protects the worth of your equipment should a power surge destroy or damage anything that is connected to the surge protector when the electrical surge occurs. Sometimes these policies can cover over $100,000 worth of damage. Not all surge protectors carry this warranty, however, so be very careful in looking at the fine print when you do decide to purchase a surge protector.
