History of Heart Disease – Dating Back to Egyptian Times
Overview Of The History Of Heart Disease
The history of heart disease contains some quite interesting facts. Over the thousands of years since ancient time, the world’s understanding of the heart disease and the importance of the heart… has changed dramatically.
The Egyptians knew the heart was very important to one’s existence on earth. The history of heart disease tells us we could learn much from the way our ancestors lived.
It was known back then that the heart was very vital to the health of the body. They believed the heart had a supernatural and metaphysical relationship to one’s being. Common beliefs about the heart exist between the Far East and ancient Egyptians thoughts on the matter.
Ancient Egypt’s Beliefs About The Heart
These ancient Egyptian archaeological discoveries tell us that they believed the seat of personality and of human wisdom originates in the heart. They believed that pathways from the heart led to other regions of the body. These pathways transmitted the flow of fluids such as blood, saliva, nutrients, and air to parts of the body where needed. They thought that if there were a blockage of one of the channels, disease would occur in the body.
Human awareness, the emotions, and the soul, so it was thought… and the heart was the core origination for these. We relate the heart to love, poetry, and our feelings, perhaps because of these ancient ideas about the heart. Back then it was commonly thought God spoke to us by means of our heart. Repeatedly since then in history, it has been written, “She has a broken heart”. The ancient Egyptians had a good understanding of health and medical matters.
History Of Heart Disease And The Middle Ages
Research on the history of heart disease of the English speaking people in the middle ages, indicate they did not have much disease caused by cholesterol. The Briton’s in the middle ages also had few occurrences of heart disease. Most food back then was eaten as it originated and not processed. Also foods such as vegetables, were allowed to grow and mature naturally without man’s interference by spraying of chemicals like herbicides on the vegetables.
The Modern Age And Cardiovascular Disease
In pre-industrial times, medical research on the history of heart disease, tells us that most people did not suffer from heart ailments and subsequent death from cardiovascular disease.
In the 19th century the industrial revolution came in full force. Heart illness incidence rates increased also in the 1800′s. Before the advent of technology and mechanization, most people performed manual labour. Many jobs involved manual labour and that helped to keep the body and heart healthy. Another related bonus of having to do physical work, is the break down of fatty accumulations in the heart and other areas of the body.
The Modern Age And Diet
As we all know nowadays, the foods we eat play a huge role in the possibility of whether or not we will have any cardiovascular ailments. You can help to keep your heart healthy by minimizing your intake of salt, trans fatty acids, and saturated fats. Fries, burgers, and such are commonly known to be unhealthy, depending on how they are prepared, and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Canned foods may have certain additives such as salt, which can exceed our recommended daily allowance for salt. Processed foods do not contain as much nutrition usually as natural foods. Good health involves good food and exercise, possibly then… we may not become a statistic in the books of the future of the history of heart disease.
