Converter Isolated
Why would a differential signal need a return or ground?
If a differential signal transmits two complementary signals (equal and opposite) then why do you need to run a return wire? Wouldn’t the signals cancel each other out completely on the receiving end?
I ask because I’m converting RS-232 to RS-422 and I understand why I need a return/ground on the 232 side before the converter, but why do I have to continue that once the signal is + and – on the 422 side?
Note that the system I’m describing is isolated from any chassis or earth ground.
