CCTV Maintenance, Camera Systems Need Maintenance Too
A CCTV camera system is just like the car that you drive. Periodic preventative maintenance is required to keep your car running and so does your CCTV system. Mounts, housings, cameras, lenses, cables and head end equipment are all parts of a complex machine that requires periodic CCTV maintenance. Without periodic CCTV maintenance the CCTV system won’t function properly and won’t produce the desired end result.
There are many things that the owner of a CCTV system can do in terms of periodic maintenance however there are just as many things that must be accomplished by a qualified technician. Only a qualified technician can be sure that an auto iris lens is functioning properly. Only a qualified technician can inspect the head end equipment, multiplexer, video tape or digital recorder and monitor and insure that the equipment is working at its full specifications. If the environmental controls (heater and fan) in the camera housing are not functioning properly then the service life of the camera and lens in the housing will be reduced.
The video signal from cameras can be compromised if the cables that are exposed to the environment are not inspected periodically. The insulation on the cables can become cracked and broken allowing rain or moisture to enter the cable and change the characteristics of the cable. The head end equipment must be cleaned and the heads on the video tape recorders cleaned. Should the heads on the recorder become clogged there will be no video signal transferred to the tape and consequently the tape will be blank. Dust and dirt can cause vent holes to be clogged and cooling fans to overheat. This also leads to a shorter service life of the equipment.
The simplest way to have CCTV maintenance preformed is for the owner of the CCTV system sign a maintenance contract with the provider of the system. The existence of the maintenance contract will insure that if one of the components in the system fail (and like any machine CCTV systems do fail) the component will be replaced free of charge or with a nominal charge. The cost of replacing components is often far greater than the entire cost of the maintenance contract.
A CCTV maintenance contract insures that the owner of the CCTV knows that the system is functioning properly and will be functioning properly when tape needs to be reviewed after an incident. Without a proper CCTV maintenance program, the owner of the system can never be fully sure that the system is going to work when it is needed. A failure to be able to retrieve data from the system can often be far more expensive than the CCTV maintenance contract which will insure that the system is functioning properly.
