Using Permanent Magnet Motors In Variable Speed Appliances
There are any number of Electric Motors in your house; just open up any appliance and look inside. Even your DVD player and your hand mixers use motors. All these domestic motors run on electricity.
There are three commercially available electric motors. The most common is the Universal, or Brush, motor. With high torque and variable speed, they work well for vacuum cleaners or drills. Induction motors have no brushes and run silently. They are single-speed and very durable and are used in pumps or refrigerators; anywhere you need constant pressure. The new motors on the market have all of these qualities: they operate at variable speeds, have high torque and they are silent and reliable.
We are familiar with the presence of micro controllers in control panels, like the dashboard of our car. We are now starting to see them in the motors that these panels control, as well. As we find it more and more important to work within the ecology of the planet, it becomes increasingly important that our motors are efficient, quiet and simple. The new electric motors provide all of that.
Variable speed is a must in high torque applications like drills, vacuum cleaners or even a Poulan chainsaw. By varying the speed, power efficiency can be increased by as much as 30 percent. The designers can also make the units smaller, lowering their price in the market.
For washing machines, an induction motor won’t work very well because the controllers are too expensive. But new magnet technology is offering alternatives such as the permanent-magnet synchronous motor with sensorless controls and semiconductor technology. These new motors run at lower speeds and save energy. They run at cooler temperatures and are very quiet, creating less waste heat and noise that needs to be abated.
In fact, these permanent magnet motors are getting more and more popular. Because they use less raw material, such as copper and steel, their price points are less affected by the swings of the commodities market. And as their popularity grows, the overall prices of the magnets comes down, as well. Even now they are used in everything from cars to cell phones.
We may not see these motors in every application; the Homelite chainsaw with a permanent magnet may not come around any time soon. But look for this innovative motor in appliances like washing machines and refrigerators. With the high torque of a traditional universal variable-speed motor and the quiet, dependable strength of the stator-driven induction motor, these workhorses are going to be an important part of our electric future.
