Do they make a digital amp meter?
i see digital volt meters inside peoples car but i was wondering if they make a digital meter that will display how many amps your car amplifier is drawing from the alternator,so as i can monitor the current being drawn?
measuring current requires what’s commonly called a clamp meter because the instrument has “arms” that physically clamp onto the power wire. They measure the strength of the induced magnetic field around the wire and calculate the current.
High current, accurate, dc clamp meters aren’t cheap, but they’re out there.
I had an opportunity to have a precision charging system monitoring instrument hooked up to my car. It was a 1300w rms system, 110A alt, standard battery. With Bass Mechanic’s ‘Tocatta in B’ at full volume the voltage was varying from 12.9-14v and the current varied from 40A to around 70.
