I use a lot of Ni-MH AA rechargeable batteries, Can I use a voltmeter to see which are most worn?
I basically have a few sets charged and ready to use, and they get cycled through different things like Game boys, digital camera, super scope. I haven’t kept them paired well, so some of the newest are probably paired with some of the oldest etc.
If you charge all your batteries up to full and then use a volt meter and a resistor like a 1 ohm 1 watt or so, and put them both across the battery at the same time, the resistor will drag down the battery voltage down.
Try holding the battery/meter combination on the battery for 10 seconds and then note the voltage reading.
Then write down the voltage of each battery on that battery with a marker.
You should then be able to sort them. The batteries with the lower voltages are closer to the end of their life than the ones that hold their voltage.
I did this quite a bit with sub-c size cell when I used to race electric cars. You may need to vary the time of the measurement, maybe 20 seconds or what ever time frame causes the voltage to drop enough. It really depends on the accuracy of you meter.
