The centimeter is a globally recognized way to measure length. It is a component of the ISU (or International System of Units). This standard or system is originated way back in history. According to records, it existed ever since the “Convention du Metre” or the Treaty of the Meter, signed in Paris on 20th of May in 1875. Ever since that time, 48 nations signed the treaty and voluntarily adopted the use of it. One of the most notable nations among them was the US.
But, the US has always been slow in fully embracing this standard. Even till today, it keeps using a number of special systems or standards of measurement, which includes the traditional “English Customary” standards. These standards use the inch. This is the reason, it is so important that you know a simple way to convert between these two standards of measurement.
The easiest way to convert centimeters to inches
Start by writing down the centimeter measurement that you want to change. To help you understand the arithmetic easily, we are drawing an example here. Say we need to change 12 centimeters into inches. The conversion is all simple if you just multiply your centimeter numeral (here, 15) by a fixed factor (0.3937).
It is all done. In figures, your multiplication and results appear like this -
15 x 0.3937 = 5.9055 inches
Simple, huh! So let’s try this again. Say, you have to convert 90 centimeters into inches.
You can convert the 90 centimeters into inches with the same old equation we just mentioned and worked out. Just multiply your centimeter numeral (in this case, 90) with that.3937 factor. If you just look at the multiplication and results, it looks something like this –
90 x 0.3937 = 35.43 inches
Final tips
For computing the amount with a much greater precision, consider using a bit longer multiplier. As said by the CIA World Factbook, a centimeter exactly equals 0.3937008 inches.
Then again, an inch equals to 2.54 centimeters. Since inches are larger compared to centimeters, while changing to inches, you will get results more compact than the figure in centimeters. Just ensure that you are using the right conversion factor to convert centimeters to inches.
