The chart utilized by researchers to classify, examine, and explain the various forms of electromagnetic radiation are called the electromagnetic spectrum. Electromagnetic waves can travel through space, although sound waves require a medium to traverse through. The majority of radiation is not harmful although more concentrated radiation such as UV rays, x-rays, and gamma rays can be particularly hazardous. Scientists who study electromagnetic theory as it relates to our world assure us that the radiation coming from computers, cell phones, and electric transmission lines will not harm us.
The electromagnetic spectrum contains seven basic types of radiation. From highest to lowest they are gamma rays, x-rays, ultra-violet, visible, infrared, microwaves, and radio waves. Radio waves have the longest wavelength; they can be as long as a football field. Electromagnetic waves are invisible to the human eye but they do transmit signals from television, cell phones, radio, and wireless internet. Radio waves are also emitted from stars and space gases. Microwaves can’t be seen and have a slightly shorter wavelength; they send sound through telephones, make Doppler weather radar work, and filter through outer space as a faint background. When talking about the Big Bang Theory or studying the Milky Way astronomers often refer to microwaves.
A relatively small amount of radiation is contained in an infrared wave, which is the third longest wave in the electromagnetic spectrum. Heat from the sun is infrared in nature. An infrared electromagnetic pulse is used by snakes to hunt warm-blooded animals in the dark. We utilize infrared heat sensors for military tactics, hunting, and even to apprehend bootleggers who illegally copy movies at theaters. Dust situated between stars is illuminated by infrared waves.
After radio, microwaves and infrared radiation, “visible radiation” pertains to what we can see of the electromagnetic spectrum. Types of electromagnetic fields for visible light include the sun, reflected light, fireflies, light bulbs, rainbows, stars, and fast-moving particles. When we get sun burned we see the effects of ultra-violet rays although we cannot actually see them. The cancer-causing rays are generally shielded by our ozone layer. Damage can come about from holes in the ozone layer or prolonged exposure. UV radiation is also emitted from stars and other extremely hot objects.
Why is our existence so dependent on the electromagnetic spectrum? Apart from adding to a few of the most significant technologies of our time, the earth gets its energy from the sun, carried by light, which maintains a thriving existence. Rather than being nothing more than uninhabitable frozen rock like many other planets, our earth has photosynthesis, the water cycle, and an atmosphere. These electromagnetic waves deserve our appreciation on many levels.
