From VIA magazine (the free publication from AAA/CSAA), page 57, July/Aug 06 issue...
A proposed law in CA aims to curb a growing problem for owners of vehicles with electronic/chipped keys.
Carmakers limit access to the computer codes of these keys-primarily as an anti-theft measure. As a result, vehicle owners have to buy replacements from a car dealer rather from other providers such as locksmiths (see my post on the $100 Ridgeline key). The cost can run to hundreds of dollars, to say nothing of delays and inconvenience.
CA Senate Bill 1542 would broaden the range of choices by requiring car manufacturers to provide a secure and convenient source that gives a car owner access to the code needed for a replacement key. If passsed the law will take effect 1/1/08 and apply to model years beginning with 2008. The SCAA is a co-sponsor of SB1542.

I'm not sure I'd like my codes out there for anyone else to copy, but I think the bill is good if it supplies access for ME only. When I got my Ridge, it came with a code for the stereo and Navigation in case I ever have to reset it. I registered these codes on the Honda Owner Link site. There is no reason that the key code could be supplied and registered as well.

Now, who is going to supply the chipped keys for us? :?: :!:

Well, I'm assuming that IF the law passes, the chipped key codes could be had at a locksmith, Home Depot, Sears; any place that cuts keys and could 'afford' the book or phone call to get the codes from Honda.

I'm sure there would have to be some of 'pre-approval' of whomever is going to sell the keys. But I'd like to think it would exactly like in the day BEFORE chipped keys.

You could get them cut anywhere...as long as you had a copy (and today/your code). You will probably have to furnish a title or proof that you own the car (VIN# or something). I'm sure it is more complex than the bill looks.

The main issue is Dealers/manufacturers having a total MONOPOLY on new car keys (that are well over $100 each). This would open it up to fair play/game.

You know they aren't costing $100, that's for sure.

Well, the cost here in northern california for a lost truck key is about $125. The blank key alone is $40.00 (on an internet Honda parts site). The part they gouge you on is the 'chipping' of the key (or the coding of it)...which is where that extra $75 bucks comes in. If you don't believe me, call your dealer and tell them you lost your keys and see what they say. You'll get a nice shock to the wallet.

Of course, you will also have to 'prove' ownership of the vehicle by showing registration or Lien slip...as you just can't walk in any longer to 'get' a key. There are now liability issues and the Dealer is now covering their fannys.

I've already priced the key...and it is OUTRAGEOUS. The reason this bill has been put to a vote.

The price is way too high. But actually if this did pass and was the case, I bet it at best would net a 20% lesser price. Of course this would also likely flood the market with inferior quality products. See where this can end up?? I wouldn't want to find out that I have a 'junk' key somewhere down the road that could leave me stranded.

Personally for the extra few bucks I would go to the dealer, we have a relationship and there is an incentive for them to continue to have me as a customer for servicing and future purchases. They have a lot to lose if they don't keep (me) the customer happy. Work with them, this has always proven sucessful for me.
