Sorry I haven't hung out here much lately, but I wanted to share what I posted on the local consumer advocate, Clark Howard's, message boards:

I bought OEM parts for my three Honda cars whenever possible with the exception of supplies like coolant, oil, oil filters, etc. My 1990 Civic needed repair. I ordered the parts at Hennessy Honda under the repair shop's account. One part was found to be defective when installed. To get the car off the rack an aftermarket part had to be used and it worked fine.

I took the receipt and defective part back to Hennessy and showed the counter guy the location of the defect. If they had said that they would not take that one part back, I would have been disappointed, but not have made a stink or this post. The Parts Manager told me that there is no warranty on any part that was not installed by the dealership, period, despite the 12 months / 12,000 mile Honda factory warranty that the Honda website and advertisements hoot about.

I called customer service at Honda America and they said that the part is indeed under manufacturer warranty, but it is up to the individual dealers to honor it. Since Honda does not own the dealerships, they have no control over the parts warranty. They suggested that I call the General Manager. I also made the repair facility who did the work aware of the situation.

The Hennessy Honda General Manager, Kevin, told me that they do not warranty the parts they sell unless they install them, period.

I intend to inform all of the independent automotive repair facilities that I can about this.

What business or car owner can afford to pay a premium price for any auto parts that have no warranty???? I know I can't nor the shop owners that I know.

Lesson here? Make sure you understand your local dealership's policy before you buy the parts.

The item in question is an oil pan gasket. I had also bought the pan at Hennessy. I understand that a gasket is traditionally an iffy item to warrant, but my beef here is being told NO WARRANTY ON ANY PARTS WE SELL.

Hope I can hang out with y'all again soon.

Thats bull crap. I work in a Parts dept for a Honda dealer and we warranty parts all the time that we sell too outside shops. All they have too do is make up a Job order in the service dept and do a Parts failure warranty. Some dealers are just retards.

Any dealer can and SHOULD be doing this. There just lazy is what it comes down too.

i have been working in honda parts for the last 8 yrs. all parts carry atleast a one year warranty. nhsledding is right on how its done. the dealer wont be out of anything, all they have to do is file a claim with honda, and most of the time they will never ask for it back. in the long run the dealership will come out ahead.
