I purchased a new 07 Silver RTX today. So far I love it! I plan and hope to start adding some extras to it soon. Can anyone give advice on the breaking in of the engine process? Thanks again :D

A 1977 650 Yamaha. Original everything. She's down now, but I am hoping to make her my winter project.

Do you ride??

Did I detect a hijacking here? :)

Congrats on the new Ridgeline. Read up on all the great features and add-ons that are available and let us know what you decide to do. Welcome to the site.

PS I don't "ride," but I know lots of you do. I see too many close calls on the roads that I travel daily and if I were to "ride" just for fun and recreation I'd never be able to find the time! My next door neighbor's daughter and son-in-law just arrrived the other day after trailering their bike to some place in Georgia from Connecticut and then rode the rest of the way down here. Must be fun, lots of people do it!

Congratulations UM Terps56! You are in for a great ride! Follow the guidelines for breakin from the owners manual and you will be fine. You will notice that the engine will gradually loosen up as you get to 3000 miles. It may seem tight 'till then. It's a Honda thing. Check your oil frequently just in case something doesn't seat correctly and check your tire pressure. Actually tire pressure has nothing to do with break-in, it's just getting cold outside and that does make a big difference. Also, several new Ridgelines have been delivered with tire pressure way too high. It's worth checking them and a few pounds makes a big difference in not only ride quality but tire wear and saftey as well.

Be sure to let us know what you think of the performance when you drive in the snow. It is exceptionally good just dont get over confidant.

The manual says no hard accelearation or hard braking for the first 600 miles.

I know some people like to change the first factory fill of oil out early, but Honda really wants you to leave that factory fill in the engine until the OLM gets down to 10-15%. The factory fill has a high moly content that will help your engine seat in better. Your first oil change will be in about 5-6000 miles. After that, you could change every 3,000 miles or the 50% OLM mark, but only reset the maintenance minder every other change because it effects the schedule for the other maintenance items.

I tried to get mine changed before the 7500(?) mark and was told to let it go - I explained that I was going out of town and couldn't get it changed until about 9k and he said that was better than changing it early! So that's what I did!

After spending a bit of time on the "Bob is the oil guy forum" I know more than any normal person should or want to know about oil. those guys are crazy (in a good way). They send their oil out for analysis and there is a repeated consensus there that from their testing that dino oil is good up to 10,000 miles. That's more than I'd want to push it, but it does make me feel better about the Honda OLM telling me to change my oil out at 5-6000 miles. I used to be a 3,000 mile guy, but no more. I should mention that though Honda reccomends following the OLM, even if your sitting at 60% OLM life after a year, they want you to change it out. Oil shouldn't stay in your engine longer than a year even if it's fresh.

I copied this text from another thread dealing with break-in. It's from me and only reflects my opinion.

Quote: › docWrite("quote")What I did was what I've always done with new vehicles. Right after purchase, and as I'm driving it home for the first time, I allow the vehicle to warm up during easy driving. This takes about twenty minutes for all the fluids to reach full warm up. After that I accelerate with 3/4 throttle from 20mph to 50mph...and then let off and deccelerate back down to 20mph. I do this on a back road and repeat about twenty times. I never give it full throttle yet. Then, I have a favorite steep hill in my area. It's about a mile uphill and works perfectly well for my next procedure. I start out at the bottom and accelerate uphill at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle until I reach the top. Then I turn around and go downhill, letting the engine slow me down the hill and cause negative pressure on the rings. I repeat the hill about five times while being sure that the engine isn't getting too hot. Again, I never give it full throttle. After those two steps I just drive it per the manual and vary the terrain as much as possible. I've done this with all my new vehicles. I got the information on some website years ago that was put out by a fella that was a mechanical engineer.
Anyway, kind of long-winded, but there it is. But if you follow the manual, all will be well too. I just get rather anal about stuff.
