rear bumper protector

Any one have or know of a plate(?) or something to protect the rear bumper above the hitch? It hasn't happened yet but I got the feeling one day I will put the trailer tung in to the rear bumper.

I already did that very thing. Creased my bumper pretty good too. :evil: I didn't back into the tongue either, I was hand walking up to the hitch on a slight downhill angle when I lost it. :oops:

There are only two kinds of people that tow. Those that have hit the bumper with the hitch and those that are going to. :lol: I think every tow vehicle I have owned has been kissed at least once. :shock:

Dawg Gone it Webby! Don’t tell us that! I recently had our brand new shiny black bumper cover replaced after a 21 year old ding-bat kid plowed into the back of us while we were sittin at a light.

Have you guys seen the two orange sticks with magnets at the bottoms “One on the trailer tongue and the other on the hitch ball?

Or, the convex mirror on a pole they sell in the Trailer Life magazine?

How bout that wireless license plate cam? Would either of these solutions help?!? :cry:

First of all, Five S, a good wife is invaluable. :) But when she isn't there you have to do it yourself. When she isn't around I use a hitch aligner mirror from Cabela's. Some of the times that I have hit the bumper have just been from brain fade, like not blocking the trailer wheels because you think the site looks level. The other times are when I haven't used an alignment aid. Back in the good old days they didn't have those things and I have been towing for over 40 years now. It can be avoided or at least greatly delayed.

I absolutely concur! The invaluable wife point is well taken. I saw the “Lego Blocks” levelers and tandem wheel chock set at Camper World and of course Cindy found the exact same one’s at Wal-Mart at a much better price. We use both whenever we pitch camp now. But I’ve been thinking if she’s not around I’d like to be able to “hook up” single handedly. Thanks for the Cabela’s Tip.

They also sell this gizmo for us trailer hitch challenged folks too!!

Thanks for the points 5S. I've looked at those hitch gizmos before and for some reason they just don't appeal to me. Go figure. The wife used to dread trying to tell me what I had to do to hook up. Now she can spot me right under the coupler. She's also great at guiding me backing either the trailer or the boat into the garage. I have to get real close to the wall with the trailer and real close to a post on my blind side with the boat. We can usually get it done on the first try.
While we are on camper talk, have you put a set of levelers on yours? They are calibrated in inches, so it makes it a snap to know how much blocking to use.

I really like it's look and if I happen to back into a tree/wall or whatever, at least some protection is present. It might even help in a small rear end collision.

Heck Web that’s nothing! You have been a great mentor during my freshman year of “Towing 101” and I truly appreciate all your help. BTW, that Cabela’s web site has some really cool outdoors supplies over and above just trailer goodies. I’ve been shopping there half the day already! However, Cindy’s not going to be as happy with you as I am……
She’s already “Trained” in the art of “Spotter” from our Winnebago days and I’ve recently learned to line up the trailer to the brick inlay on our driveway while backing her in. We just use the bright orange Lynx Leverler Blocks which look like huge “Lego’s” for left to right leveling and my new 1000-lbs capacity folding tongue jack for front to rear leveling.

Wow thanks a lot for all the great ideas and advice. I really like the coupler plate. I also like the step I didn't think I needed one until today getting in and out of the bed in the snow. That back sept can be slick.

I've never backed into a wall yet, but as I get older, I'm gettin a tad 'Jerry Lewis' like in my coordination. :oops:

When I'm not towing, I have a wireless remote reverse sensing step bumper installed. It will support 250 lb, but I doubt it would help much in a rear end collison.
