HO model trains may be the most popular scale model trains across the world. Toy train hobbyists can find many kinds of out-of-the-box kits and parts of cars, engines, and scenery from different manufacturers. More than other train scales, HO model trains are characterized by different levels of manufacturing quality. High end HO scale model train sets substantially higher manufacturing quality when compared to other HO scale model trains. A lot of HO model trains is not very High Quality. In contrast, some HO model train makers focus on making very low price HO gauge scale model trains into the mass market of model toy trains, rather than to the more discerning end of the collector HO scale model train market.

The most miniature scale model train sets have engines which can be only an inch or two inches long as bigger scale model train sets can have cars each of which can be a yard long. Scale model train sets first employed the nomenclature gauge which refers to the distance in between each rail, as actual railways employ, when real transport railroad systems make reference the gauge measurement of their rails in their railroad track. In modern days, it is more likely for “scale” to be the term employed to identify the proportional size of the toy railroad. Hence, the word scale solely refers to the size of the of the model train set, and the terminology gauge only relates to the space from inside one rail to another.
Electric model train set scales are standard across the world by an assortment of toy railroad hobbyist organizations. Some of the model train set scales are recognized over the world, whilst lesser known toy railroad scales are less widely utilized and in many cases can be virtually unrecognized outside where they originated. Toy model train set scales can be presented with a number ratio or as a letter defined in model train set standards, eg: G scale model trains, HO Gauge Model trains including AHM Rivarossi HO scale model train sets, N scale or N gauge model trains, O gauge model trains, OO gauge model trains, S scale train sets, and Z scale model trains. By the way, the more common size are the HO gauge or HO scale model trains.
Early train sets did not get manufactured to any specific ratio, scale, or size. They were just toys rather than small scale re-creations of the full-size transportation railroad systems. In time, the realism of scale model train sets got better and standardization of specific model train set size, scale, and ratio improved. The standardization of model train track guage made interchangeable engines and cars possible. Even though model trains are modeled at a much smaller scale, size, or ratio, these scale toy railroads are not exactly proportional. For many of the standardized scales of toy railroads, the scale, ratio, and size may not be applied for each component of the scale toy railroad. Because of the requirements of durability, some parts of the toy train may be constructed bigger than proper scale.
Current mass volume construction operations result in scale model trains with significant realism. Modern scale model trains might include toy railroad engines; toy train specialty train cars; toy train roads, signals, and tracks; and even toy train layout vehicles, buildings, and figures plus toy train layout canyons and hills. Railroad scale model train set track layouts can range from simplistic circular train tracks and oval train tracks up to complex layouts of actual locations.
