The Answer To Environmental Damage From Surfboards?
Surfing is a sport that is synonymous with nature. The crashing waves, the fresh sea air and the reliance on mother nature for good surf, all suggest that this is the most organic of extreme sports. Environmentalists have recently started rallying however, about the real harms of surfboard production. The truth is that their are number of harmful human and environmental side-effect to the production of these boards.
Many of the surfboards you find now are formed from a core of polyurethane foam. This is then surrounded by one or two layers of fibreglass before covering in a protecting polyester-based resin. A substance widely considered as carcinogenic can be found in the foam, named toluene diisocyanate. The styrene gas that is also produced during manufacture has been criticised by health professionals due to its harmful effect on the nervous system and its ability to cause nausea, tiredness and disorientation. Further to this, production also releases volatile organic components (VOCs) and carbon into the atmosphere. The biodegradable quality of most surfboard compounds is quite poor as well.
There has been so much talk about the negative effects that one factory in California, owned by surf legend Gordon Clark has decided to cease trading. Clark’s production company was responsible for manufacturing around 85% of all blanks but after being hounded by the State of California, he decided to shut the business down. This had led to the predicted shortage of pre-shaped surfboards in the States and so many big companies are in desperate need of alternatives.
The surf capital of England – Cornwall, is indeed founder of one such alternative. The Surfers Against Sewage charity in England helped develop Biofoam, one of the newest products to hit the market. It uses 45% plant-based materials, making it 60% more renewable and emitting around 30% less harmful chemicals during its manufacture. On top of this, a new 95 percent natural resin coating is now being used on their ‘Ecoboards’.
Inquires have come from all across the globe, asking for samples from the company who manufacture the new Biofoam and Ecoboards. It is still early days but they soon hope to start applying their eco-technology to the creation of snowboards as well.
