Windsurf or sailboard question?
I’m new to windsurfing and I’m having a problem. First thing is that there hasn’t been a good windy day since I got my gear(two months ago) so all my practicing is being done in very little wind, 0-8 mph. It sucks I know but I have no money for the arcade anymore lol. Anyways as soon as I give the sail a little power my board turns up wind.
My feet are behind the sail, the sail is level and it seems like the more forward I drop the sail(to turn the board down wind)it pulls even more up wind. I don’t get it. I’m normally good at getting in the grove of things but I just can’t feel this out. I have a mistral malibu board. Also I’m not sure if I should use the dagger board or what it’s even for. I seem to have more control with out it.
The main reason you end going up wind is because you are puting to much pressure/weight in your back foot(s) or you are leaning the mast backwards too much. The pressure with your feet has to be mainly WITH YOUR TOES, do not keep your feet flant and DO NOT put weight with your HEELS. A few things you can do, likely a combination of several of them: 1) Rise the boom, like to chin height. In light wind you want the boom higher, this way, when you hang from the it you can transfer your weight better to the front of the board through the mast and keep the board flatter (longitudinally) without sinking the tail 2) Avoid puting to much weight in the back of the board 3) Try to make your feet “light”, and put pressure with your toes rather than your heels. Keep the board transversally flat or sink more the DOWNWIND rail rather than the UPWIND ONE (most beginners do exactly the oppossite) 4) Put more pressure with your front foot rather than the back one 5) Make sure when you try to hang from the boom that you are not leaning the mast back, actually make an effort to lean it slighty forward (to the front of the board) 6) If you have a daggerboard, use it 7) Use a larger fin (if you have one) 
If you have a harness, try using it, it will put more weight in the boom, then the mast and then front of the board. And then, practice, practice, practice.
