Atwood water heater models have been on the market for a long time, and they are currently the most popular RV water heating units in the world.
Atwood Mobile Products are continually improving their units, and judging by the user-friendly features of their standard models, and the innovative technology of their latest exothermic models, you can see why they are one of the leaders in this specialized field.
They make several 6 and 10 gallon propane-fired units. For each tank size, you can choose between one or two supplementary water heating options. As a backup, or for use when you want to accelerate the water heating process, some models include a built-in electric heating element in the hot water tank. When the propane burners and the heating element are used simultaneously, a 6 gallon water heater can produce 13.6 gallons of hot water per hour, and a 10 gallon model can heat 14.7 gallons per hour.
Some models have a heat exchanger in the hot water tank. When the RV’s engine is running, coolant from the engine is pumped through the heat exchanger, and heat from the engine is transferred to the water in the tank. Using this system, you can heat water while driving to your destination, and have hot water ready and waiting for you first shower, on arrival.
Atwood models either use a pilot light or a direct spark ignition (DSI) system., A DSI water heater can be activated by a remote switch inside the vehicle. This is a great convenience during poor weather conditions.
Each Atwood water heater is built around a very lightweight well insulated aluminum tank. To improve efficiency Atwood have introduced a patented system that utilizes the pilot flame to assist in maintaining the water temperature when the unit is not in use.
Recently, Atwood developed exothermic water heater models. With this technology, a heat exchanger assists in heating the water to a very high temperature. By mixing this hot water with cold water prior to delivery, an exothermic model can produce 50% more hot water than its actual tank size. With this ingenious system a 6 gallon model can produce 9 gallons of hot water, and a 10 gallon model can provide 16 gallons.
An Atwood RV hot water heater is designed to be either surface-mounted or flush-mounted in the sidewall of coaches, fifth wheels and trailers. However, to conserve space you can purchase doors that facilitate mounting behind a baggage door or under the floor.
Standard models sell for between $300 and $580 depending on their tank size, and their ignition and supplementary heating systems. The exothermic models are priced between $690 and $780. All models come with a 2 year warranty that covers defective parts and labour.
