What is the difference between a megohm test and HiPot test when testing Electric Motors?

They’re very similar tests. What i’m looking for is the reason why they’re so similar yet one is potentially damaging to the motor and the other is not. What is it the testers do that make them different from each other.

An insulation test is generally done at a potential of 500 or 1000V.
A hi-pot test may be done at a much higher potential, and for a specified period of time.
Any arc- over during this time can create a breakdown point in the insulation, rendering the motor or other item useless.
There was a time when I had to apply a hi- pot test at 4kV to a circuit and its power transformer, as it was believed at the time it needed to be done for a European KEMA certification. The transformer had to be tested on an earthed metal base.
The information was false. The transformer insulation was more than adequate for abnormal HV pulses on the supply lines, but often arced over at 4kV applied to it for the 4 minutes supposedly required, resulting in the destruction of many of the transformers. There were other components in the system that would never stand such a potential, and had to be disconnected for the test. Ridiculous.
Thank goodness, the people I worked for eventually tweaked…
