SPEAK UP – I CAN’T HEAR YOU

Is anyone looking forward to growing old?  Once we’ve ‘grown up’, we don’t want to grow old – and many of us tend to deny the realities of advancing age instead of facing up to them.
One of those realities is age-related hearing loss.It affects about 33 per cent of people over 65, and over half of people over 75.Men are more likely to be affected by hearing loss than females and it tends to be passed down through the generations. And because hearing loss can be a gradual process, some people don’t recognise that they’re affected.And even if they do realise it, they are often quick to deny it.
People are far more likely to turn up the volume on the radio or television or make behavioural changes before seeking medical help.In fact, studies indicate that most people ignore their diminishing hearing for around 6 years before having a check up.  
Some indications of hearing loss are :
* Turning up the volume on the television or radio
* Hard to hear people when there’s background noise
• Increased difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds, such as female and children’s voices
* Increasing difficulty talking on the phone
* Social withdrawal
* Tendency to avoid noisy public spaces such as restaurants, coffee shops
* Difficulty picking up ordinary household sounds such as water running, telephone ringing
• Buzzing or ringing in the ears
• Favouring one side of your body
• Asking people to repeat themselves
Hearing aids could well be the answer for millions of sufferers, but the sad reality is that only one out of ten people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually wears one.However, many people still believe that hearing aids are difficult to wear, not effective, unattractive and uncomfortable – despite the fact that technology has made huge advances.

As more than 50% of people with a hearing loss are affected in both ears, McDade says it is often better to wear hearing instruments in both ears.”For a better overall sound quality and a more balanced, normal sound, people should wear two hearing instruments,” he said, “which is called binaural amplification”.  “This can mean people are more relaxed and comfortable – which in turn, means their quality of life is improved.”
