Different Bar Drinks Require Different Types Of Ice
The amount of dilution required by your bar drinks would determine the type of ice that you should use. For instance, you would want only a measured amount of dilution if you were preparing some martinis or manhattans for your guests. So, a type of ice that melts very fast is not ideal for these bar drinks as it can over dilute your drink. The perfect type of ice to use in this case is an ice cube. Ice cubes melt slowly in the shaker and do not dilute your bar drinks too much.
If you are planning to serve frozen bar drinks instead, crushed ice is definitely better. In frozen bar drinks, you don’t want chunks of ice floating around. The crushed ice will better incorporate into the drink when you mix them together in the blender.
When you are preparing shaken bar drinks that must have a bit more dilution, then crushed ice it should be. Crushed ice melt quicker than ice cubes, so your bar recipes will have more additional water. This may be undesirable when you are serving martinis or manhattans, but some drinks do require more dilution to tame, for instance, the sugar or lime juice.
Crushed ice also work nicely when you want to chill a glass. They have more cooling area owing to their greater surface area. Therefore, they can chill a glass faster compared to ice cubes or other types of ice.
Finally, you should only use blocks of ice if you want to serve a punch bowl for a party. A punch bowl has to be cold for hours, unlike bar drinks. If you use a type of ice that melts quickly, your punch will soon have lots of water. A block of ice melts slower than ice cubes. Hence, it will cool the punch longer without diluting it too much.
Different types of ice should be used for different bar drinks. Give as much thought on the type of ice to use as on the ingredients to add in your drink recipes. The ice could help give your drink that extra something.
