Technology can tremendously help improve the quality of life for people with low vision. Modern Life News has compiled our list of five essential and innovative vision products for 2011.

1) Cell Phones for Seniors. It is all about portable devices in 2011, however many devices do not meet the needs of people with low vision. Cell phones keep getting smaller and smaller, yet baby boomer’s vision requires larger and larger text for readability. The tiny buttons on a cell phone are often too hard to read for people with vision problems. The solution is a cell phone designed specifically for those with low vision.

Modern Life News recommends the Snapfon ez ONE cell phone. This cell phone features large buttons for easy dialing. The display is much larger than other cell phones with a 28 pt. font for readability. There is also a talking key pad and built in LED flashlight.

2) Digital Readers are a must have for anyone with low vision who enjoys reading and looking at pictures. Digital readers are devices which scan, magnify, and display books, newspapers, photographs, dollar bills and anything you need magnified in order to see. Modern Life News really likes the Carson DR-200 ezRead digital reader. It provides a magnification of 7.5, yet remains affordable at a retail price of $70. It is lightweight and ergonomically designed for extended use. Higher end models with even greater zoom magnification are available for several hundred dollars. Likewise, smaller models are available for travel and using outside the home.

3) Low Vision Keyboards keep Seniors connected on the computer despite vision problems. These keyboards feature extra large buttons for easy reading. Low Vision keyboards come in black and white, or black and yellow for increased contrast which helps readability. The Visikey keyboard is one such keyboard. Several models are also available online at amazon.com. Amazon also sells a packet of magnified letters and symbols that are stickers to be manually added to an existing keyboard.

4) Bold Print Kitchen Supplies like measuring cups and measuring spoons will keep low vision cooks happy in the kitchen. Don’t lose out on the pleasure of cooking and baking just because of low vision. These simple yet infinitely useful products are just like the measuring cups and spoons you are used to cooking with, however they feature large, bold letters for readability.

5) Miniature LED Lights such as headlamps and booklights provide plenty of light focused just where you need it. Obviously making sure you have lots of good non-glaring light will greatly improve your vision. Although convenient many people find wearing headlamps awkward. Book lights are simply LED lights that clip on your book while reading it.

Sometimes even watching TV can be difficult without the eyes of a 20 year old. The majority of remote controls have small buttons and text making their use difficult in low light especially for those with less than perfect vision. A simple vision aid called the Pop-up Microlite is now available that you stick on your remote controls to illuminate both the buttons and text in dim lighting. These tiny shielded LED lights have many uses including illuminating thermostats, breaker boxes, door keyholes, telephones, and the backside of computers, stereos and televisions, to name just a few.
