AICS – Military Chassis Systems For Hunting Rifles
Accuracy International is a British Manufacture founded by the late two times Olympic Gold Medal winning smallbore rifle shooter Malcolm Cooper MBE. Over the last quarter of a century, AI has come to dominate the world market for sniper and anti materiel rifles. Armies all over the world use the AI rifles and they are standard issue with the British, Australian, Swedish, Belgian, Dutch and German armies and the US Navy SEALs.
As great as they were, AI’s own bolt action rifles, the AW and AWM, were prohibitively expensive for most civilian sports shooters to purchase. AI responded by taking the best selling bolt action hunting rifle of all time, the Remington 700 and giving it a military makeover.
The Accuracy International Chassis Sustem or AICS is built around a solid aluminium chassis, milled from a solid billet of aircraft grade aluminium. A V-shaped, self centering bedding block takes the rifles action, torqued down with a pair of bolts provided in the kit. Chemical resistant polymer panels are bolted on to the chassis to give the stock its unique flat-sided ergonomics, making the rifle very easy to carry via a sling. Accuracy international put a lot of thought into the carriage of the rifle and came up with a unique harness sling which attaches to H&K style flush fitting attachment points on the chassis system. Mounting points are included for both AI and Harris bipods, the latter displacing the former on British L115 sniper rifles. The stock includes a thumbhole grip that is tolerant of different sized hands. To suit different terrains and applications the chassis system is available with green, dark earth or black panels.
Four variants are available. The Stage 1.5 and Stage 2.0 differ in being non folding and folding respectively. The Stages each have a long and short action version to suit the action lengths of the Remington 700. The short action can accommodate any cartridge based on the .308 whereas the long takes the .300 Winmag. The US Navy SEALs adopted the .300 Winmag Stage 2 AICS fo their Mk 13 Mod 5 Sniper Weapon System.
One big advantage of the AICS system is that it takes highly reliable detachable magazines. The AI 5 round .308 magazine is flush fitting and the AI 10 round .308 magazine protrudes from the chassis. The AI 5 round .300 Win. magazine differs in being single column. These magazines have become a de facto standard for Remington 700 detachable mag conversions and are used by Surgeon Rifles and Badger Ordnance among others.
The AICS is very easy to fit, requiring no gunsmithing whatsoever – just the services of a torque wrench. As you would expect, the barrel is completely free floating with a very generous barrel channel. This system is not completely integral like the epoxy bonding used in the military AIs, but it is a robust bedding system that won’t move due to humidity or temperature.
All this regidity comes at a price, with AICS models adding up to 5 lb. 11 oz. to the weight of your rifle. This will add to the stability of your rifle, but not to its portability. This isn’t a rifle you’ll want to haul up and down mountains, but it makes for an ideal platform for all weather varminting or predator control. As you will have realised, this is an expensive upgrade. Prices as of Jan 2011 run from $857 to 1100. The premium price reflects its quality, sheer robustness and prestigious military heritage.
