Thermal conductivity and temperature?
I have white SMD light led and it produces heat which needs to be drawn away. Led is 4w, around 80% from that is heat, 20% light, so 3.2w of heat. Printed circuit boards have different thermal conductivity, measured in W/m-K. How do I convert my 3.2w of heat to W/m-K? I want to know if my chosen PCB will be enough for this led.
Take an ideal case, with a cylinder of material, hot on one side and cool on the other, ∆T being the difference in temperature. A is the cross sectional area, and L is the length of the cylinder.
power = K x ∆T x A / L
K is thermal conductivity, let it be 1 W/mK for this example.
so if you have a 1 cm² contact area, and 1 mm with ∆T temperature difference, the amount of power is 4w, then ∆T is:
4 = 1 x ∆T x (1e-4) / (1e-3)
∆T = 4/0.1 = 40ºC
But, PC material is a poor thermal conductor and tends to get damaged and chars at high temperature. 3 watts is a lot for a small package.
