About 10 years ago, the Internet, with minimum speeds at that time, was still unheard of in many parts of the world. Utilizing the ultra-thin strands made out of glass or plastic, whether in the field of communications or medicine, fiber optic technology has made a huge impact in a person’s everyday life.
Fiber optic technology utilizes internal reflections of light to send information in the form of light pulses. Unlike copper cables, these pulses of light save energy that would otherwise be lost during data transmission. Fiber optics has no interference due to other electromagnetic wavese, permitting for more precise and efficient transmission. In addition, in contrast to ADSL or 3G, fiber optic technology comes with a larger bandwidth and faster connectivity.
The single or multi-mode strands of optical fiber used in fiber optic technology have the power to transfer much more data per second than a much larger coaxial cable. Presently, it can transmit data at a speed of 33 megabits per second. We can expect that this rate will be much faster and more cost-effective in the near future.
Though fiber optics can be a little expensive at the moment, but it can become a cheaper alternative in the long run.
