Using Jumper Wires And Breadboards For Electronic Circuit Design
Possibly the quickest and simplest way to test a new circuit design is by using a breadboard with jumper wires. Hobbyists would not have to solder components to test their designs, and designs can be changed quickly at any point. Parts wouldn’t be spoiled by the continual soldering and de-soldering.
Breadboards are usually found on microcontroller evaluation boards which come in an integrated package that can quickly test new circuit designs or connect to other external devices. There are also circuit simulation programs available that would test a whole circuit without the necessity for hardware, but this wouldn’t catch all the problems that might occur in a real circuit under various conditions.
Nonetheless using jumper wires and a breadboard does have its own challenges because of the length of the jumper cable wires and the contact resistance and stray capacitance in the jumper connections. The capacitance can be as high as 25 pF and the inductance of the longer wires may typically limit the frequency of operation to less than 10 MHz. Another issue is that breadboards typically can’t accommodate SMD (surface-mount technology) devices or parts with a pin-out arrangement that does not match the dual in-line layout. These elements usually have to be soldered (or plugged) into a small package called a breakout adapter, which are installed with a single in-line or dual in-line connector which will plug directly onto the breadboard with 0.1″ spacing.
Most breadboards are made for use with ICs in a standard twin in-line (DIP) package with 0.1″ spacing, which can plug into a breadboard along the centerline, where there’s a recessed groove that would provide protection against over-heating. There are 25 or even more terminal strips running out from every side of this center notch, where additional connections from other wires and components can connect to each pin on an IC. A separate junction can be made for wires and parts in spaces where there’s no IC. The contact holes in a breadboard have spring loaded clips internally for a firm connection.
There are also longer terminal strips running along the length of the board which are used as Power Supply bus bars. 2 separate power supplies can be used for two sets of terminal strips. The red wires are generally utilised for the positive voltage and the black wires are utilised for negative (or ground). The circuit can be far easier to follow when color-coding is used to identify the various nodes in a circuit.
