Reflector Collimator
is my scope ok to use visually out of box?
i just got an Astro-tech AT8in reflector and would like to know if i will need a collimator if i am only using it for now visually?
It certainly won’t hurt to use it without collimating it, but depending on if your scope was chosen for the box tossing contest by the shippers it may be nicely collimated or it could be out of whack.
If it is out of adjustment, the views won’t be as nice as they should be.

You can create a sight tube (a very basic collimation tool that works pretty well) by taking a 35mm film vial and drilling a small hole (about 1/16″ is good) in the center of the cap and cutting the bottom off. It’ll look somewhat like a cheap eyepiece except instead of having glass you’ve just got the small hole to look through. If you don’t have a film vial, ask a friend who uses a 35mm camera or ask at a camera store.
Orion sells a combination sight tube/cheshire for about $25 that will be a little easier to get good results with, and laser collimators are nice too, but really the item you can make with a scrap film vial can do the job just fine.
If you’re not already a member of an astronomical society, you’ll find tracking down your nearest one and getting involved will add to your enjoyment of the hobby.
