Practical And Cost Effective Electric Car

Ready to go green? Californians will be able to get their hands on the Nissan Leaf as early as December 2010. There’s been talk about reducing or eliminating our dependence on gasoline, but is the technology really there? Is it going to be practical?

There are many reasons to go electric.

The Nissan Leaf produces zero emissions. None. That’s wonderful news to anyone who believes it’s outrageous to contaminate the air we breathe to the point where we have a smog alert system. When the air is unhealthy to breathe, the Air Quality Management District issues a smog alert, advising people not to exercise outdoors. Soccer practices, picnics and recesses are cancelled and people are forced indoors. All because we’re addicted to gasoline. What if you could use your car all you want without polluting the air? Imagine now that zero emissions cars are the norm and gasoline is only something from the history books. As an added green bonus, the Leaf will be almost fully recyclable at the end of its life, so it won’t end up in a landfill.

Imagine bypassing the gas station – every time you see one. Most electric cars, including the new Chevy Volt, can use gasoline when the car runs out of electric power. Not so with the Leaf. This car runs on electricity only. You’ll never again buy gasoline. You won’t care what the price of gas is. You won’t care any more. The downside of an all electric car has been one of the main impediments to widespread acceptance of these vehicles. You can’t switch over to gas when the battery dies. In the past, limited range has kept electric cars from being practical. The Leaf can go 100 miles on a charge. That’s more than enough for most people. The vast majority of drivers travel far less than 100 miles in a day. You would charge your car battery at night when electricity prices are lower anyway. So now you’re paying for electricity instead of gas, right? How cost effective is that? Well, at average electricity rates, charging the Nissan Leaf would cost under $3. Yep – less than a gallon of gasoline.

The challenge comes in on long drives. During a long drive like a family vacation or a trip to a different state, a driver would have to stop along the way to charge the battery, which used to take hours if you could find a charging station. The Leaf’s navigation system can show you the locations of charging stations on your route. A quick charge station can charge the Leaf’s battery will charge up to 80% in about half an hour. That’s sufficient to make long trips practical. The car could be fully charged and ready to go by the time you finish a meal. It even makes sense for restaurants that cater to long-distance travelers to install quick charge stations – if there are enough Nissan Leafs on the road.

Price has been an impediment for many types of alternative fuel cars. New technology is expensive. Americans can buy a Nissan Leaf for about $35,000. There is some speculation that Nissan is willing to lose money at the beginning in order to establish itself as the major player in the electric car market. The price of the Leaf is higher in Japan. The Leaf’s price is $27,500 after a $7,500 tax credit. This is low enough to compete with the Toyota Prius and the Honda CR-V. A home charging station costs about $2,200 installed, and are eligible for a tax credit of 50% of the price.

In spite of the few remaining problems, I think the Nissan Leaf is practical for most drivers.
