Ring Terminals
In article 1 i outlined some of the main culprits for car trouble and we left at the fuel pump.
The fuel pump can be accessed fairly easily in some cars and with great difficulty in others.
(Important note)
Before you even attempt to go near the Electronic Components of the fuel system disconnect the battery , remember negative terminal first positive terminal second and do not place any tool across the two terminals, this will result in a damaged battery, damaged circuitry and possible damaged D.I.Yer. So always think twice before you do anything and do not dive in the deep end.
You may need to consult some kind of technical document to find out exactly where your fuel pump is, i would recommend doing a google search similar to the following – “the fuel pump is located >.
So lets take a ford galaxy for example, the search would look like this – “the ford galaxy fuel pump is located “, and google will fill in the blanks and hopefully find your fuel pump location in a technical document on the web somewhere. Be sure to check all search results thoroughly and cross reference them to be safe.
When you find out the location of you fuel pump, take it out carefully , it will usually be held fast by a combination of small hexagonal bolts and a few years worth of grime, be sure not to damage the wiring entering the fuel pump as this will just exaggerate your problems and be certain that you have removed all bolts before trying to remove with some gentle force.
When you have the pump in your hand follow its wiring back to a junction box and take note of the positions of each of the wires, there should be a red and a black wire, i recommend having a note book beside you to take down which wire is going where, otherwise you will have the pump sucking petrol out of the engine and into the tank!!!
Next gently remove the wires from the junction so that you can take it completely away from the car.This may take a bit of persuasion so try to balance it, not too rough and not too gentle. When you eventually have the pump free you can now begin to diagnose some problems with it.
First off i would recommend purchasing a multimeter, this is a commonly used tool and is a must have for all d.i.yers, it will be used again.
If you do not have a multimeter get your hands on a 9 volt battery, these are the type found in smoke alarms, Put the two wires from the fuel pump onto the two terminals of the 9v battery, if you hear it working, perfect, put it back and leave well alone. If it does not work you can do 1 of two things ,1. ring a garage and ask them to order a fuel pump for your model of car and re-fit it yourself or 2. take the fuel pump apart further and find the exact cause of the problem and replace it rather than the whole pump.
I personally would choose and recommend option 2, Electric Motors are fairly complex machines, if you mess up an electronic component near petrol you could find yourself in big trouble very quickly, and all at 90 mph on a freeway, not good.
So, by now you should have found out if the fuel pump was a factor in your engine trouble.
If it was, congratulations, if not lets press on to find more possible culprits.
