Music Without Cords? – The Latest Generation Of Wireless Audio Transmitters
A large number of wireless audio transmitter products have emerged over the years. They claim to cut the cables to your audio equipment. We will examine the impact of new technologies on the performance of these devices. Also, we’ll investigate if they keep their claim of eliminating the cable clutter.
Wireless transmission of music has begun with the launch of commercial radio broadcasts several decades ago. FM radio is still popular until today even though some new technologies such as satellite radio and digital radio formats such as HD radio and DAB radio have begun to substitute traditional FM radio. Today’s wireless consumer products such as wireless speaker kits, baby monitors, Bluetooth audio transmitters and wireless microphones cut the cord.
One of the main application for wireless audio is distributing music throughout the home and setting up speakers without running speaker cords which is a big difficulty in houses that are not wired for audio. The technologies used today all have pros and cons as we will examine.
Let’s look at the most traditional technology first: FM broadcasts. FM audio transmitters send the audio by employing a high-frequency signal which is continuously changing in frequency according to the audio signal. The technology, which is called frequency modulation (FM), is fairly straightforward and cost-effective to build and offers high range. As a consequence, the majority of today’s 900 MHz wireless headphones utilize FM transmission. However, FM has some major drawbacks.
The FM signal will pick up static. Therefore there will be noticeable background noise. The amount of static will depend on the location of the transmitter and radio. The reason for the varying quality is a phenomenon called multipath fading which is a result of reflected radio waves cancelling each other out. One method to cope with this problem is using two antennae instead of one. Devices using this technique are known as diversity receivers. FM radios will easily pick up interference from other consumer products which is another problem.
Bluetooth based audio transmitters have gained popularity lately. Bluetooth is a popular wireless protocol which was designed primarily as an interface between computer peripheral products. Bluetooth will convert he audio into a digital format. This data is then sent via the Bluetooth wireless protocol. While offering high robustness against wireless interference, Bluetooth has several pitfalls in regard to audio transmission since it was never designed with the purpose of transmitting audio. The first drawback is the limited range which typically would be 30 ft or less. The next problem is the fact that Bluetooth does not have enough room to transmit CD-quality audio and consequently the audio is compressed first. As a result of the audio compression, the audio quality will decrease. The final drawback is the fact that Bluetooth will introduce a delay in the signal (also known as latency) which is a problem when used together with video since the audio will be out of sync or if used in a surround sound setup where some of the speakers would be out of sync with the hard-wired speakers.
Terrestrial digital and satellite radio technologies offer high range but use extensive audio compression and have an audio delay of up to several seconds.
Another technology which is used in wireless audio transmitters from Amphony sends the audio digitally without using audio compression. The audio signal will preserve CD quality because no audio compression is used. This technology offers an audio latency of less than 1 ms. As a result these transmitters can be used for wireless speaker kits in a home theater setup and other real-time applications.
By using error correction, this technology can cope with interference from competing wireless devices which is key in today’s noisy environment. Rather than utilizing the crowded 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz frequency bands, Amphony products operate at 5.8 GHz and thus offer high robustness. Other than Bluetooth, this technology can operate any number of receivers per transmitter which is essential for sending audio to several locations throughout the home.
