How Does A Hydraulic Solenoid Valve Run?

The hydraulic solenoid valve is made from 2 parts. These are the solenoid and the valve. Electric current is passed thru the solenoid which then converts this electrical energy into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is used to open and close the valve. A tiny flow circuit is integrated in the direct acting valve. But then the valve uses this small flow to control the flow across a much greater hole.

To help in controlling the flow, solenoid valves can have electrical interfaces and also use rubber or metal seals. When the valve is not working, it can be held by a spring in the closed or open position. At first the valve is in the closed state. The liquid which is under great pressure enters the valve. There is an elastic diaphragm that has a tiny cavity in it. A touch of liquid enters thru this hole. The aperture on the opposing side is filled up. The liquid keeps filling up till the pressure is same on both sides.

Though the pressure is the same on each side, the uppermost side has a bigger force which closes the valve. Since the force is kind of robust, the valve remains shut. As the force applied increases, it tightens the valve still further. The hole is blocked by a pin which is attached to a spring. When the pin is drawn upwards, the hydraulic solenoid valve is magnetized; the liquid will enter the hole and go to the opposing side. The strain on the preceding side will drop, the diaphragm will be opened and the valve will be opened.

When the solenoid is demagnetized, the cavity closes and the diaphragm comes down leading to closure of the valve. So it’s the difference in pressure for the valve to work. The pressure at the input should be more than at the output for the valve to work.

Often, a pilot is utilized before a main valve. It’s possible to get this as a single unit. These varieties of units need less power but are slow. For the valve to remain open, the pilot needs full power all of the time. But a direct hydraulic solenoid valve wishes full power just for a set time and then low power to sustain it.
