Milling Machine Basics: 6 Parts You Should Understand
A milling machine has six basic parts, which include the head, motor, spindle, drive system, quill, and the worktable itself.
In the early 1800?s, milling machines were used for filing down metal components consistently. Very few modifications and improvements were made to the rudimentary form of the milling machine, however in 1861, the device was revolutionized by Brown & Sharpe to travel in the X, Y and Z axis. In the 1980’s computer technology was integrated into the milling machine and automated its various processes. In addition, it helped achieve more accurate and consistent operation. Through the course of time, milling machines have become an essential and much-used item in machinery shops. Spindle repair and other maintenance of the machine will be decided on only after inspecting it regularly by the operators. It is good to have an understanding of the various parts of the milling machine such its operation, handling and maintenance can be properly made.
Head
In manual mills, the primary and topmost part is called the head. To find the spindle and motor, look in this part. The head’s job is turning electrical power into mechanical energy to use in the spindle.
Motor
The motor generates the electrical power needed for the spindle. What rotates the spindle, is a belt-driven system, through which it operates. The speed of the rotation, depending on the gear being used in such instances, can then vary between the ranges of 50, and even beyond 4000 RPM.
Spindle
Because of the cutting tool attached to it, the spindle is involved in the cutting process. If you make some changes in the spindle, it can be made to turn in any direction.
Drive system
Where the head is located, lies the drive system. It also lets the milling machine operator modify the rotational speed of the spindle and, consequently, the cutting mechanism.
Quill
The component that keeps the spindle in place is known as quill. It moves up and down and may be controlled using the quill feed. The quill may be moved up or down using the hand wheel of the quill feed. The quill has a lock so that different products can be cut at the same depth all at once.
Work table
Put the production pieces on the work surface. It has slot components that are utilized for fastening the work pieces in plate. The production material may be moved in X, Y or Z direction, on the work table. Direction X moves horizontally from left to right. While the Z direction involves moving the piece up and down, the Y direction is a front to back movement. The work table may be modified in several configurations to improve flexibility during the cutting process. The component that allows the worktable to be moved horizontally from left to right and vice versa, is the longitudinal traverse hand wheel. Conversely, you can move the work table in and out by using the traverse hand wheel. The worktable may be moved upward and downward together with other milling machine parts such as the saddle and knee using the vertical movement crank.
Due to their technical significance, the various parts of milling machines have to be maintained properly and repairs should be made immediately when needed.
