Persuading Myself To Make The VoIP Switch
Most people tend not to like change too much when it can be avoided. We instinctively try to alter our routine and daily structure as little as possible and when we do make changes, they tend to be small or gradual rather than radical ones. So it was a bit of a shock to the system when I went ahead and changed my phone carrier, but I feel rather gratified in having taken the plunge.
A landline phone service shouldn’t require rocket scientists to run properly, you’d think. Hundreds of companies manage it on a daily basis, but I’d managed to choose a provider that had seemingly set itself an incredibly low threshold of customer satisfaction and was putting every effort into underachieving it. So after the final straw finally landing on my back, I ditched them completely and went for a VoIP voice provider instead. I had some initial worries: what if I wasn’t around to take a call? Would I be able to hear the other person clearly enough? Would it be too unlike my regular phone system for me to use it properly at all?
I shouldn’t have worried, the hardest decision turned out to be picking out which of the phone plans to try. I ended up deciding on a monthly contract to evaluate the service, with a view to extending this to a cheaper prepaid contract if I was happy, or giving myself the option of crawling back to a landline provider for reconnection. The problem of being home for a call was dealt with quickly: voice mail handled any missed calls and I was able to use a travel adapter on my laptop, so my VoIP account travelled with me to work and to meetings anyway.
The call quality largely depended on the bandwidth of the connection, I had one or two scratches of static on some internet cafe calls, but then everyone was using the wifi so browsing speeds weren’t great either. There were never any calls I had to finish because there was no way to understand one another, and I found that the softphone software was really easy to use and only took a minute or so to install on the computer.
