How To Make A Solar Panel – Some Basic Concepts To Consider
Learning how to make a solar panel offers some excellent benefits to your family and the environment. One must decide where and how to mount the photovoltaic (PV) unit before proceeding. After you’ve sorted this out, and have obtained the necessary materials, you can get started with the construction process. Using a voltmeter to determine the completed unit’s output, it is easy to estimate how many will be needed to meet one’s electricity needs.
Theoretically it is doable to build a primitive unit for producing electricity using some very elementary materials. By this I mean copper sheeting with an oxide coating that when placed in a salt water vat will lead to a small current. But this type of unit generates little electricity, and many would be needed to run even one major appliance.
So if you want a panel the will create usable amounts of electricity, a photovoltaic panel is the best solution for learning how to make a solar panel. You can make one of these panels from commercially available solar cells connected together to form a unit, or you can put the whole thing together from scratch. The most economical way to do this will likely be to pay money for the parts separately for assembly.
Planning just how and where you will put your solar cells is of course very important. If you are fortunate enough to have a big backyard, you can even put your solar cells on the ground in such a position that they collect the maximum quantity of sun. The most popular position for solar cells is on the roof. The standard form is a frame positioned according to your latitude so that the sunshine stays focused on the cells as long as possible. You can use a fixed mount or you can have a tracking device that keeps the panels turned towards the sun.
As far as backing goes, a plyboard material works reasonably for attaching the silicon PV cells. They may be bought altogether from a distributor, or for maximum savings, broken cells will do the job and can be purchased cheaply. You will need to cover the panels with a protective transparent sheet of some sort. There are a few other things you’ll need for construction, including protective varnish, a volt meter, wire, solder and silicone sealant.
Cut your plywood sheets to match your arrays of solar cells. The varnish is for coating the plywood to protect it from the sunshine. Connecting all the individual cells together is the next step. Using a soldering iron, solder the tabs on the back of the cells. With the tabbing wire, link the cells to one another from the front of one to the back of the other, attached in rows. Make sure that you have a single wire running from the back of each row; this is for transferring electricity to the storage battery.
The next step in the procedure of how to make a solar panel is to bond the cells to the plyboard, with holes drilled in it to run the wires to the battery. Then place the plexiglass over the plywood to seal in the cells and use silicone glue to seal any gaps or holes. Having said that, you will need to drill small holes next to the wires so that surplus heat can’t build up inside the panel. Run all the wires to a junction box which you then hook up to a battery.
You can simply check the power yield of your panel using a voltmeter. Then its easy to calculate how many units are needed to power some appliances, or to furnish the full power needs of the dwelling. For complete assembly instructions on how to make a solar panel, plans are available on the internet or from a local distributer.
