Different Types of 12v Solar Chargers
Many people are aware that solar chargers are a good alternative to non-renewable energy sources, but not everyone knows just how simple they are to build. The purpose of this piece is to pass on some of the facts about different types of solar battery chargers, as well as how to make your own.
In the most basic terms, a battery charger may be nothing more than a Power Supply that sends electricity of a specific voltage to a battery. All you need to do is connect the battery to the power supply, wait for it to charge all the way, and then disconnect it. If you need to charge a 12 volt battery, you can plug it into a 15-18 volt charger. The price of this system’s simplicity, though, is that it’s easy to overcharge the battery.
When you overcharge a battery, it’s likely that the battery’s life will be adversely affected, often significantly. A seriously overcharged 12 volt battery may even lose its ability to hold a charge. However, you can use a charge controller, which will make sure that the necessary voltage is used and prevent the battery from being overcharged. A charge controller is equally necessary when you’re using a 12 volt solar charger, as it allows you to leave a battery in throughout the day without the risk of overcharging.
For 12 volt batteries, the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) type of charge controller is the most common one. In simple terms, a PWM charge controller works by turning a switch on and off very quickly. At first, the switch stays “on” more. As electricity is transferred to the battery, the switch spends more time activated than deactivated, and when the battery is completely charged, the switch no longer turns back on. A microprocessor chip oversees the charging process. There is no risk of overcharging with a PWM charge controller, even if you have it plugged into a battery indefinitely. When you have a battery that you don’t necessarily use all the time, you can take make use of this type of “trickle charging” in order to make sure that the battery is available and fully charged whenever you need it. This feature is obviously very appropriate for a 12 volt solar charger. This is a handy way of keeping the 12 volt battery for, for example, a boat or an RV charged.
A 12 volt solar charger is just that simple. The power source is the only thing that differentiates a 12 volt solar charger from an ordinary 12 volt battery charger. Most of the solar panels used on houses contain 1/2 volt and 3-4 amp solar cells. Several of these cells have to be joined in order to produce the 15-18 volts necessary for a 12 volt battery charger. Currently, there are small solar panels of many different voltages on the market. Matching the voltage of the solar panel to your charge controller will enable you to create a working solar battery charger. The voltage rating on the charge controller tells you what voltage you’ll need. If you’re not using a charge controller, a solar panel of 15-18 volts is usually a fairly safe bet. The method for wiring the solar panel to the charge controller depends on certain factors within the controller. Generally, it’s safe to solder the same kind of connector onto the solar panel that’s on your charge controller. If you’re not using a charge controller, you can do so with the same type of connector that’s on the battery. Spring loaded clamps are a good choice if you’re using a larger type of 12 volt battery. For non-mechanically inclined types, you aren’t absolutely required to solder (although this type of soldering is really easy even if you’ve never done it before); it’s possible to just twist the wires together and use electrical tape. A soldering iron and solder, which you can find at places like Radio Shack, are all you’ll need to do this. First, twist the wires together. Then, use the soldering iron on the wires. Finally, touch the solder to the wires until it melts. You just need to be careful not to burn yourself, and to heat the wires, not the solder, with the soldering iron – the solder is then melted by the heated wires. It’s really as easy as that! If you can do that, you can build a 12 volt solar charger without any problems. A 12 volt battery is the first ingredient. Making sure to get one with the appropriate voltage, you’ll also need a charge controller. Next, you’ll need a solar panel that also has the corresponding voltage for the charge controller – you can build one yourself or buy one. The last step is to connect all the parts – connect the solar panel to the charge controller, and the charge controller to the battery. Now, you have free power, forever! By using solar energy instead of oil to charge your battery, you’re helping cut pollution and dependence on foreign oil, and saving yourself a lot of money in the long run.
