Essentials Of Geotechnical Construction Drilling
The successful execution of a large number of specialty geotechnical construction techniques necessitates the efficient and safe drilling of holes through any and all ground conditions. To use inappropriate means or methods may actually do more damage to the ground properties or structural construction of the area you are trying to remedy.
There are a potentially bewildering variety of drilling methods and associated technical concerns
The specialty geotechnical construction processes of grouting, anchoring, micropiling, soil nailing and ground freezing all require the drilling of holes through overburden and/or rock. The holes usually have a diameter of three to twelve inches and not normally going deeper than 200 feet.
Different kinds of drill holes
Inclination of holes for grouting, micropiling and freezing is commonly within 30 degrees vertical while for anchoring and nailing the usual hole is inclined within 30 degrees horizontal. Although rock masses naturally are variable in terms of strength and structure, overburden – from the drilling viewpoint – usually poses far greater difficulties to the drilling contractor.
Understanding overburden in construction drilling
Let us first define overburden in the context it is used in this article. It is any non-lithified material, deposited or formed naturally or built by man. This material may either be soft or loose, or hard and dense. It may also range from dry to saturated. Overburden may contain artificial and/or atypical inclusions or horizons, which will be problematical to penetrate – for example, boulders or deep foundations in soils, and utility trenches or shallow foundations in fills. These conditions will be specially onerous to drilling contractors who would naturally want to drill holes as quickly as possible for economic reasons.
What is considered ideal construction drilling
1. The drilling systems will be at their most efficient when capable of drilling continuously and in a straight penetration through all material, no matter how soft or hard it is.
2. The diameter provided must be constant, stable, the path is full depth, and with all debris removed. All these must be accomplished in conformity with the standards of specialty construction process being served.
3. They will employ appropriate combinations of thrust, torque, rotary speed, percussive effort and flush parameters to economically reach target depth.
4. They must facilitate the effectiveness of the flushing medium used.
5. The choice of construction drilling systems to be used must be based on ground conditions and not the cost, albeit considering historial bias and regional experience.
6. Application should determine technique. It must also conform within the restraints covered by environmental protection rules on noise, vibrations, flush control and disposal.
7. The hole must be used for its intended purpose (e.g., anchor tendon installation) as soon as possible after drilling to minimize any time-dependent deterioration of its walls.
