A Beautiful Christmas Eve In Salzburg
Christmas and Advent in the Osterreich (= Republic of Austria) are the nicest yet most cherished of holidays, with a plenty of candlelight, powdered sugar, and greenery so fresh that houses seem forest-filled. Two nights before Christmas in Salzburg, it even felt as we had the city to ourselves.
Our hotel situated not so far away, its tiny windows shut tight against the storm, drifts of eiderdowns on the beds. If you think that we had time to enjoy the inside for a while, you’re wrong. Believe us, we didn’t even have time to turn on the KWN321 room-heater; not to mention the tools at the sports-center. Dropping all the belongings bundled to the ears we took our new 1 J1 camera and immediately headed to the Christmas market, which spreads its wares before the Salzburg Cathedral throughout the month of December.
Very similar with the medieval markets that once huddled like chicks around the cathedrals of Europe, the Christkindlmarkt is a series of little wooden stalls where merchants sell necessities and nonsense, stamping their feet like ponies against the cold.
Right at the corner, in the Residenzplatz, the cathedral’s towers cast their shadow on a small forest of firs. We chose a tree for Christmas-tree like adopting a puppy: size, shape and above all personality must be considered, with a special interest in the slightly askew, the orphan that must be fostered. At the end we found the smallest, most crooked little tree among the giants, its top branch raised as if calling for help.
Back on the streets, we sought out a warm place to eat. In the Stiftskeller of St. Peter’s Abbey, families idled away the afternoon, children fishing the noodles from their Fridattensuppe. It’s a cheek-by-jowl sort of place –big jowls, often, tucking into pork prepared any number of ways, while the dogs beneath the table wait patiently for scraps. We watched our sauerkraut steam and sliced at our sausages, our minds on dessert.
Suppose that every city has its soundtrack, Salzburg’s mixes Rodgers and Hammerstein with Mozart, the singing nun and wunderkind. At the previous day, when we had the Sound of Music bus tour, our earphones were full of music. We wandered through the Wohnhaus’s sparely furnished rooms, passing from a Baroque organ with a choir of plaster angels to manuscripts through which the music pours with scarcely a strikeout.
At night, we joined the midnight mass on St. Petr’s, a smaller kind of abbeys church. This time we had to walk down the dark streets toward this Romanesque building frosted with Rococo designs in the 18th century, where the graveyard’s red votive candles flicker like coals in the snow. At midnight the great doors creak open and we go out into the cold again, past the creche where the manger still waits empty. We join hands and stand in the square as ice-frosted steeples shake up and down the valley, and the very air is bells.
