How To Choose Your Garden Furniture And Make It Last
Choosing and maintain your garden furniture with the help of this guide.As the garden and patio are becoming increasingly important areas of your house, so too is your garden furniture.
Do some research before you buy a set of garden furniture.This will make it more likely that you’ll get the right furniture and it will last for time to come.Following are some important tips you need to consider before you buy.
Firstly decide whether you want stackable or foldaway furniture that will be put away in the shed or garage in winter or if you want permanent solid garden furniture that remains in situ all year round.For permanent garden furniture, consider hardwood, aluminium or rust proof wrought iron.Although the initial cost of the more durable materials will be high, it will be worth it in the long run as they will last much longer than cheaper alternatives.
Getting the right construction and material will make all the difference.Choose a material that will complement you garden or patio garden.Choose a material that will balance out your garden.
Wood is the best all round as it is lightweight, aesthetically pleasing and comfortable but requires some maintenance.Tropical woods tend to be high in natural oils e.g. teak, iroko or courbaril, which make them ideal.These are good as they can be left outside all year round.
Joints should be mortice and tenon, be wary if they are just metal bolts as these have the potential to corrode.Check that all metal fittings are made from stainless steel, aluminium or brass all of which are rust proof.
Check that teak garden furniture has been made from premium grade teak, this will ensure that there are no cracks or defects in the wood.Ideally, your teak furniture will have been kiln dried so the moisture content is at an optimum, this will stave away the dreaded cracks.
Teak garden furniture that is assembled using epoxy based glues tend to have the best performance and durability of all the types of joints as the epoxy resin used will not be affected by rain or frost.
The best way to clean your teak furniture is to scrub it with hot soapy water, this will restore the weathered silvery look.
If you do want to wash it down with a pressure hose, do so at 60-80 bar (psi 900 – 1200) but don’t get closer than 30cm from the surface.Add a small amount of bleach to the water once a year. This will stop algae growing on the surface.
Any stains and grease spots can be immediately removed by washing down using a light detergent then rinsing off with clean water as soon as they occur. However, this is not essential as nature will take its course over time.
You may notice hairline cracks in the surface when the weather is dry.Don’t worry about this, the wood will regain its moisture naturally overtime.
Teak oil or varnish won’t necessarily improve the lifespan of your garden furniture but it will improve the suface finish if applied when new.Teak oils vary so make sure you read the instructions first.Unless you want a very black finish, be sure to apply teak oil to dry wood only.
